How to Order Custom Fine Jewelry from Ferko's: The Full Process, Timeline, and Cost
Ferko's Fine Jewelry
You are scrolling on that app that none of us can get enough of, and you see a jewelry design you like on the celebrity you adore. Of course, you save it immediately. A few scrolls later, you see something similar on the influencer that the algorithm keeps bringing to the timeline. But this time something feels off, and you wonder if it would be better if the stone was bigger, or the metal color was different.
By the third time you run into some version of the same piece, it sparks an idea that could turn into a completely different design.
Or maybe the design was never the point in the first place. Sometimes there is no version to begin with. There is just an idea that has been sitting in your head, waiting for the right nudge to become real.
Welcome to your custom jewelry era.
What Makes Custom Jewelry Different
Custom jewelry means you're not simply choosing from what's already made. It can be a completely original design, or a meaningful change to something that already exists. Either way, custom made jewelry is made around what you have in mind, rather than picked from a finished collection.
At Ferko's, the process starts with a conversation and takes shape through sketches, design approvals, and hands-on production. Sometimes the starting point is a piece you want to change and sometimes a custom jewelry design developed completely from scratch.
Here is exactly how that process works at Ferko’s, how long each stage tends to take, and what shapes the final cost.

The Step by Step Custom Order Process
We keep the process straightforward, so you always know what is happening, what comes next, and what you are approving.
- Share Your Idea: Send us inspiration photos, sketches, saved images, or simply describe what you have in mind. If you already have a budget range or a deadline, include that too. The more we know at the start, the better we can guide you.
- Consultation and Design Direction: We review your ideas together and talk through the details, including style, metal choice, stone type, and wearability. This is where a rough idea starts becoming a piece that feels right for you.
- Sketch and Design Approval: We develop the design direction and refine the details before moving forward. Once the design direction is approved, the project can move into CAD.
- CAD Design and Approval: We prepare a CAD drawing for your review. A non-refundable $200 deposit is required to get the CAD started and is applied toward your total. Once the CAD is approved, the remaining payment is due before production begins.
- Once the remaining payment has been made, production begins. Casting, stone setting, hand-finishing, and other production work happen in Studio Ferko’s, so the process stays in-house from the design stage through completion. You can also learn more about how we work at the bench.
- Final Quality Check: Before your piece ships, we complete final quality checks to make sure the finished piece meets the required standards.
- Delivery: Your finished piece is prepared for insured delivery. We may also share final photos before it leaves the studio, so you can see your finished piece before it arrives.
That is the difference between handcrafted jewelry made to order and something pulled from a production line. A custom piece takes time because there are real decisions, skilled hands, and quality checks behind it. Knowing that upfront makes the process much easier to navigate.
How Long Does It Take
Because custom jewelry is made specifically for you, the timeline can shift depending on the design, materials, and stone availability. If you have a specific deadline, let us know at the beginning of the process so we can discuss the timeline before your order gets underway.
Stage | Timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Idea and Initial Inquiry | Varies | Depends on the details of your project and the information you provide. |
CAD Design | 3–5 days | Starts once the design direction is confirmed. |
Production | 3–4 weeks | Begins once the CAD design is approved and the remaining payment has been made. Includes the time needed to craft your piece and complete the final quality check. |
Shipping | 3–7 days | Includes insured shipping to your delivery address. |
What Does Custom Fine Jewelry Cost
There is no flat price for custom fine jewelry because every piece is priced around its materials, design, and production requirements. A few factors consistently have the biggest impact on the final cost:
- Metal: The type of the gold used and weight of the piece, along with the complexity of the band or setting, directly affect the cost.
- Stone selection: The number, size, and type of stones all influence the price. Choosing lab-grown diamonds over natural diamonds can offer a lower-cost alternative.
- Design complexity: Intricate settings, multiple components, and designs that combine different metals or stones require more time and skilled work.
- Prototype needs: If a physical prototype is needed before production, it adds both time and cost compared with a design that moves forward from CAD approval.
As a general starting point, a simple custom piece in 14K gold may fall under $500, while more elaborate designs can move into the $500–$1,000 range or higher. A fully custom engagement ring, particularly one with multiple or larger stones, will typically require a higher budget. If you already have a number in mind, share it at the beginning. It helps guide decisions about the metal, stone size, setting, and overall design before the process gets underway.

What Can Be Custom Made at Ferko’s
From a tiny personal detail to a fully realized design built from scratch, we welcome custom projects.
Custom Rings
With a custom ring, you can shape the details around the design you have in mind, from the metal and band style to the stone and setting. Whether you are adapting an existing idea or starting from scratch, the result is a ring made to your specifications.
For custom engagement rings, that can mean incorporating a meaningful detail into the design, choosing a stone connected to a particular memory, or creating a detail that only the two of you understand.
Custom Necklaces
A custom necklace gives you room to personalize the chain, pendant, metal, stones, and other design details. This can range from a simple custom gold necklace to a more personal piece built around a name, initial, date, or other meaningful detail. You could turn a shared reference, a favorite phrase, or even an inside joke into a design detail that has meaning beyond what anyone else sees.
Custom Name Necklaces
A custom name necklace turns a name, word, or personal detail into a piece you can wear every day. You can explore more about the possibilities and considerations in Ferko’s complete guide to custom gold name necklaces.
Custom Pendants
A custom pendant can be designed around a particular shape, symbol, stone, or idea. It can be something understated or a more distinctive piece designed around a detail that means something to you. Think of a symbol with a personal meaning, a shape drawn from a place you love, or a small visual reference that means something to you.
Custom Earrings
With custom earrings, the design can be developed around the shape, size, proportions, metal, and stone arrangement you want. You can also use an existing design as a starting point and adapt it into a pair that better suits your preferences. That could mean reworking a favorite earring into a different proportion, creating a pair around an unusual stone shape, or designing mismatched earrings that work together as a set.
Before You Start: What to Come Prepared With
A few details can make the custom process much easier from the start and help the first design direction get closer to what you have in mind.
- Inspiration images: Bring a moodboard, screenshots, saved images, or photos of pieces you already own. Rough references are perfectly fine.
- A budget range: Even an approximate number helps keep the design and material choices realistic from the first conversation.
- Sizing information: Have your ring or bracelet size ready if you are ordering a piece that needs a specific fit.
- A timeline: If the piece needs to be ready for a specific date, mention it at the beginning so the timeline can be discussed before the process starts.
- Personalization details: Think about the details that could make the piece feel uniquely yours. It could be an initial that stands for someone you love, a date you never want to forget, a birthstone tied to a family member, or a symbol connected to a memory you want to keep close.
The more you can share about what you like, what you want to spend, and what you have in mind, the faster we can turn an idea into a design that feels right. If you have questions or want to talk through your idea, our team is happy to help.
What to Know Before You Order
Custom jewelry comes with a few things worth knowing before you approve the design and move into production:
- Returns: Custom and personalized orders are not eligible for returns or exchanges, unless the piece arrives damaged or defective. This is why it is important to review the design and details carefully before production begins.
- Revisions: Changes and refinements should be addressed during the design and CAD approval stages, before production begins. Ferko’s does not specify a set number of revisions, so any changes should be discussed during the design process.
- Production transparency: Like every Ferko’s piece, custom orders are also made in-house at Studio Ferko’s, with the team involved throughout the process. You receive a CAD design for approval before production begins, and the remaining payment is due once you approve the design.
- Warranty: Every piece is covered by Ferko’s six-month warranty. The warranty becomes void if the jewelry is serviced or altered by a third-party jeweler.
Knowing these points upfront gives you a clearer picture of what happens before, during, and after your custom order. You know when your design becomes final, what happens once production starts, and what support is available after your piece arrives.
The Joy of Creating A Custom Piece
Having a custom piece made for you and being involved in each step of the way is part of the fun. And seeing a piece that existed only in your head become something you can hold in your hands is where the real joy is.
